Vampire Survivors wins Bafta Game Awards 2023 – Elden Ring gets best multiplayer

God Of War Ragnarök has not performed the clean sweep that was expected of it at the Bafta Video Game Awards, although it did win several categories.

Although the actual awards section is only a small part of the appeal The Game Awards have long established themselves as the closest thing the video games industry has to the Oscars. The second closest though has always been the Bafta Game Awards.

This year’s winners were announced at a ceremony on Thursday night, where it was widely expected that God Of War Ragnarök would walk away with most of the big awards, since it had been nominated a record-breaking 14 times.

In the end though it only won in five technical and performance-based categories, and not Best Game. Instead that honour went to low budget indie game Vampire Survivors, which was certainly a surprise.

Vampire Survivors is a great game, but Bafta always tends to favour British-made games, as well titles with a strong narrative.

It also has a history of underrepresenting Japanese-made games, with Elden Ring – which won Game of the Year at The Game Awards – only winning Best Multiplayer and Original Property (i.e. not a sequel or licence). Bayonetta 3 was not nominated for anything.

At first, Best Multiplayer seems an odd award for Elden Ring to even been be nominated for, but it makes a certain amount of sense when you consider the co-op options and the way you share tips with other players.

God Of War Ragnarök’s biggest win of the night was the EE Game of the Year award, which is the only one voted on by the public.

Previously, Bafta announced that PlayStation veteran Shuhei Yoshida would be awarded a Bafta Fellowship and he was there on the night to collect his well-deserved prize.
