Take a Look at the Jean Paul Gaultier Paris sacai Haute Couture FW21 Collection07/08/2021
Announced last year, Chitose Abe kicked off her outlook of Jean Paul Gaultier with a recent Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2021 collection showing. Taking over for the eponymous French designer, Abe reenvisioned the iconic label with a close cast of collaborators.
Delving into the maison’s signature pieces, Chitose Abe injected signature sacai design elements into 31 looks. The avant-garde display included everything from Madonna’s corset with tennis stripes to MA-1 bombers and a trench coat converted into a dress. Other items included patchworked knits, skirts that express super-oversized accordion waists, a vintage jean repurposed underskirt and replica of a jacket from JPG’s ‘94 fashion show.
Incorporated through the collection are garments marked with tattoo prints from Los Angeles-based artist Dr. Woo in reference to a classic element of Jean Paul Gaultier. Additional tributes come in the form of a multi-fabric striped sweater that transitions from opaque satin to sheer tulle, a signature tartan is re-imagined as a ruffled petticoat and Jean Paul Gaultier’s worn at his last couture show have been converted into an evening gown and pant ensemble.
Aside from the heavily covered Jean Paul Gaultier x sacai x Nike Vaporwaffle capsule, Chitose Abe also worked closely with Pierre Hardy on overstitched boots and thigh-high boots inspired by JPG’s legendary corsets. Additionally, to mark the unveiling of the Haute Couture FW21 collection, a ready-to-wear drop complete with an ultra-limited edition of JPG’s original fragrance marked with Dr. Woo’s tattoo print is now available online.
