Netflix Commemorates 25th Anniversary With a Nostalgic Video Reel

In 1997, Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in Scotts Valley, California. The two founders reportedly came up with the idea while carpooling to work together. Inspired by Amazon’s retail model, the co-founders launched the company by renting and selling DVDs by mail, operating out of Hastings’ home.

This year, Netflix celebrates 25 years of business, having grown to a massive media conglomerate with over 200 million subscribers across 190 countries and its own lineup of widely-popular original movies and television series, including Stranger Things, Squid Game, Black Mirror and more.

To mark the anniversary, Netflix offered fans a look back at its humble beginnings and a walk through its interesting history with a new animated reel.

The video shows what the original Netflix website looked like and how the company adapted when DVDs eventually became less relevant. Thankfully, the internet was booming by that point, and the company was able to pivot its focus to streaming online.
