Meghan Markle Hits Wimbledon for Her First Solo Post-Baby Outing

With baby Archie’s christening slated for this weekend, an appearance by the infant’s royal parents was expected over the next few days. But one member of the Sussex house made an unexpected cameo on Thursday — Meghan Markle just made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon to support her close pal (and tennis legend) Serena Williams. While Meghan popped up at an MLB game with Prince Harry last weekend, the Duchess’ sporty afternoon marks her first solo outing since having baby Archie.

Well, to clarify, by “solo,” we mean Meghan was not in the company of any other members of the royal family. But she was in good company, as she brought along two close friends: Northwestern alums Genevieve Hillis and Lindsay Roth. The women appeared relaxed and happy as they watched Williams play against Slovakia’s Kaja Juvan in the women’s singles second round match.

Prior to Meghan’s surprise cameo, there was speculation over whether she’d take a break from maternity leave for what has become a bit of a tradition. In 2016, she attended Wimbledon around the time she was set up with her future royal husband. In 2018, she enjoyed attending with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, one of their first outings together.

Meghan continued the tradition this year, making it special once again by squeezing in some time with a few of her best pals ahead of an official royal event. According to Cosmopolitan, Hills and Roth are reportedly in London to attend baby Archie’s christening on Saturday — a suggestion that has sparked rumors that they might be among the godparents Meghan and Harry have chosen for their firstborn child.

Whether that is true, we may never know. Buckingham Palace recently released an official statement regarding the christening, explaining in it, “The godparents, in keeping with their wishes, will remain private.” So, even if Hills and Roth are two of Archie’s godparents, it isn’t likely to become public knowledge.

On the plus side, Buckingham Palace did confirm that the public will get a sneak peek at the ceremony. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex look forward to sharing some image taken on the day by photographer Chris Allerton,” the statement said, adding that the christening will take place in the private chapel at Windsor Castle.

While the christening will be Meghan’s fifth public outing (including today’s tennis tourney) since Archie was born, her maternity leave won’t officially end until the fall.
