Trump Administration Backs Led Zeppelin In ‘Stairway’ Copyright Case08/22/2019
President Donald Trump‘s administration has filed an amicus brief with the U.S Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals supporting Led Zeppelin in a copyright case involving their widely popular song, “Stairway to Heaven.”
The filing from the U.S. Copyright Office and the Department of Justice argues “Stairway To Heaven” doesn’t infringe upon the song “Taurus” from the rock band Spirit.
A jury previously sided with Led Zeppelin in a trial in 2016, but the Ninth Circuit subsequently decided to review the case.
The U.S. government’s brief argued that “the arrangement at issue here would be eligible, at most, for thin copyright protection” and claimed “no reasonable jury could conclude that the passages are virtually identical.”
