Joe Lycett has claimed his entire “tantrum” on Steph’s Packed Lunch, which saw the comedian storming off the Channel 4 programme hosted by Steph McGovern on Thursday, was staged.
The TV funny man has released a lengthy statement saying his aim all along was to get the yoghurt drink brand Yop to stop using “white PET plastic” as it’s “much harder to recycle”.
Posting an image of himself relaxing and smiling in his garden next to a bottle of the drink on his Instagram page, Joe captioned: “STATEMENT: Some of you might’ve seen or read that I had a ‘tantrum’ on Steph’s Packed Lunch yesterday and ‘stormed off’ the show.
“This is absolutely true. What you might not know is: I planned the whole thing.
“Clear PET plastic bottles are widely recycled and contribute to the circular economy,” the comedian continued. “If you put a clear PET plastic bottle in the recycling there’s a good chance it will become another clear PET plastic bottle. Coloured and in particular white PET plastic bottles are much harder to recycle.
“I explained this on Thursday’s show, but later a picture with a bottle (made with white PET plastic) appeared on screen.”
Going on to explain how the situation escalated when Steph pointed out his “apparent hypocrisy”, Joe, 32, said him “kicking off” was all a ruse.
“All of it was planned, all of it rehearsed,” the presenter claimed, revealing that he went further to get the brand to notice his efforts with the help of a friend a day later.

“Today I seeded pictures of me drinking from one of these bottles which Greg James agreed to retweet,” Joe said. “The tabloids loved it – Mummy’s all over the press! The bottle in question? Yop.
“I risked my reputation as a jolly, affable and very-much-available chat show guest to say this as loud as I can: Yop, it’s time to stop using white PET plastic. What you sayin’ Yop?” the star added.
OK! has contacted Yop’s representatives for a comment.
In response to his explanation, Irish presenter Angela Scanlon commented: “I love yoo.”
While fellow comic Chris Sweeney joked: “I always knew you were trouble.”
At the time, fans were puzzled by Joe storming off the show, with some deeming it an “over reaction”.
One person wrote: “Joe I love your work but walking off was a bit of an over reaction. Could have shrugged it off and joked about it.”
“Come on Joe, if you dish it out you gotta take it too. Especially if that's how you make a living. Hissy-fits are for Piers Morgan man,” another said.
While a third backed up the comedian, supporting: “Getting called out on live tv is not fair and I completely get why you walked off.”
