Singer Jesy Nelson broke down in an interview as she opened up about the crippling panic attack she suffered that saw her spend in time in hospital and contributed to her decision to leave Little Mix.

Ending up in hospital following the panic attack was the ‘final straw’ for the 30 year old star and led to her quitting the band back in November 2020.

Jesy suffered a public panic attack in September last year as Little Mix were preparing to appear on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Jesy’s former bandmate Perrie Edwards, 28, was forced to take over her part as she was unable to continue.

She then suffered another panic attack while filming the music video for the band's tune Sweet Melody, after which she spent time in hospital.

Jesy recalled to The Guardian: “I was having these panic attacks out of nowhere. I couldn’t understand what was happening. It got to the point where I thought, this is too much – I need to come out of this now.”

As she talked about suffering a panic attack on set of the Sweet Melody music video, Jesy broke down in the interview.

She said through tears: “I did the music video and had a panic attack, and it was pretty mental that day. God, I haven’t really spoken about it and I’m getting upset. Sorry.”

She added: “After the video I just got back in a really dark place and ended up back in hospital. That was when my mum said, ‘No more.’”

She continued. “I had already decided. Then the girls spoke to mum and said, ‘We think Jesy should come out of this now. She has to look after herself.’

“I know there are people who think I’ve let the other girls down, and that I’m so selfish, but I do think there comes a time in life when you do have to be selfish and look after yourself, and it was really affecting me mentally.”

Since leaving the band Jesy has launched a solo career and recently took to Instagram to share the very first listen to a brief snippet of her new solo music.

A source toldThe Sunearlier this month: "Jesy spent several months at the beginning of the year working on the music and it has all come together quite quickly.

"Her new record label Polydor are keen to strike while the iron is hot, so they are throwing everything at her project and want the first single out in a matter of weeks."

They added: "It is more upbeat than some might be expecting and there will be plenty of choreography in the video. The difference this time is that she is not comparing herself to her bandmates. It’s been so refreshing for her."
